Texas Council on Economic Education Partners with Basden & Ivie, PC, West End Companies and PlainsCapital Bank to Offer "Fiscal Fitness" Competition for DFW High School Students

DALLAS, Oct. 2, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- The Texas Council on Economic Education (TCEE), a nonprofit organization committed to teaching economics and personal financial literacy, offers high school students in the Dallas-Fort Worth area the opportunity to express nonpartisan opinions through the "Fiscal Fitness: Economics Competition." Students are invited to submit a written essay or video discussing the direction the United States should take to continue on a road to prosperity.

The students' recommendations will be based on research of the current status of the U.S. economy through the study of statistics and recommendations from experts in the field of economics and fiscal policy. Entries to the competition will be accepted September 17 through October 10, 2012, at 5 p.m. CST and can be submitted through the website www.economicstexas.org.

"The Fiscal Fitness: Economics Competition, like the other programs offered and supported by TCEE, such as the Stock Market Game™, Personal Financial Literacy Challenge and Economics Challenge will allow students to 'flex their economic muscles' and utilize their knowledge of economics and fiscal policy in their essay or video," said Laura Ewing, president of TCEE. "We're always impressed by the work our students produce, and we're excited to see what students in DFW have in store for the judges."

Winners in each category will receive an award in the amount of $200 for first place, $175 for second place, $150 for third place and $50 for honorable mention. The winning students' sponsoring teachers will receive a matching cash award. Cash awards are provided by PlainsCapital Bank, the education sponsor for the "Fiscal Fitness: Economics Competition." In addition, the first place student winner in each category and their sponsoring teachers will each receive an Apple iPad, provided by West End Companies, LLC.

The winning students and sponsoring teachers will be invited to a luncheon event and panel discussion on November 8, 2012, where the awards and prizes will be presented. The luncheon event, presented by Basden & Ivie, PC, "Post-Election Economics 101: What Happens Next?" features nationally-recognized economists and industry specialists discussing the next moves for the national and global economy after the US presidential election.
