Chihuly Garden and Glass to Unveil Temporary Exhibition: Chihuly Silvered

SEATTLE, Oct. 3, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- On Saturday, October 13, Chihuly Garden and Glass will present a temporary exhibition of Chihuly Silvered in its Glasshouse. The artwork will be on view through November 12 and will feature eight pieces including Jerusalem Cylinders, Soft Cylinders and Venetians and provide guests a look at another aspect in Chihuly's career – explorations with silvering.

Chihuly was first intrigued by the idea of silvering while in Venice on a Fulbright fellowship in 1968 but it wasn't until discovering a silvering studio in Monterrey, Mexico in 1996 that the artist first experimented with silvered glass. In 2009, Chihuly began to explore the full range of possibilities that silvering glass could have for his artwork.

"We are thrilled to be able to share this temporary exhibition with the public in the beautiful setting of the Glasshouse. This series reflects Dale's energy and creative spirit that make his artwork so unique. Having this temporary exhibition is a great addition to many different series already presented throughout Chihuly Garden and Glass. It is a wonderful show for us because we are able to share current artwork not represented in our long-term exhibition," said Michelle Bufano, executive director, Chihuly Garden and Glass.

An example of Chihuly's continued experimentation, Chihuly Silvered transforms selections of the artist's series and collaborations by adding a reflective interior layer. Venetians, created in collaboration with glass master Lino Tagliapietra, honor a favorite city and its enduring aesthetic influence. Soft Cylinders were created with Joey Kirkpatrick and Flora C. Mace, with whom Chihuly recently returned to the Tacoma Museum of Glass hotshop. Jerusalem Cylinders, a paradox of composition with the vase-shaped bodies supporting precariously balanced crystal chunks were originally created to celebrate Chihuly in the Light of Jerusalem, 2000.

All guests visiting Chihuly Garden and Glass during the Chihuly Silvered run will have access to these new pieces and the artwork and personal collections already assembled in this long-term exhibition.
