ExxonMobil, Others to be Sued over New York City Oil Spill

The New York State attorney general said today that he plans to sue Exxon Mobil over a nearly 30-year old oil spill in New York City.

Cuomo said the Exxon lawsuit is intended to force the cleanup of the spillage of 17 million gallons of oil in the city's Greenpoint section since 1978. Other details on the spill were not immediately available.

Attorney General Andrew Cuomo also said he intends to sue BP, Chevron, utility KeySpan and mining company Phelps Dodge over contamination in nearby Newton Creek.

"This is one of the worst environmental disasters in the nation, larger than the Exxon Valdez and slower in the cleanup," Cuomo said in a statement. "Exxon Mobil must and will be held accountable."

None of the companies were immediately available for comment.
