Qualcomm Sees Short-Term Impact From Patent Ruling

Wireless chip maker Qualcomm said Wednesday that it expects an "immediate short-term impact" after a court ruled that it must halt sales of chips that infringe on Broadcom patents.

"While Qualcomm will attempt to obtain further relief and clarity from the court on certain aspects of its order, the inability to obtain such relief will have an immediate short-term impact as handset customers transition to new designs for WCDMA products," said Chief Executive Paul Jacobs on an analyst call.

U.S. District Judge James Selna ruled on Monday that Qualcomm must immediately stop selling third-generation, or 3G, WCDMA cellular chips that infringe on Broadcom patents.
