Big Media Earnings

Traders are eager to hear from the media titans this week. But will they say what the Street wants to hear?

If media earnings were a TV show, the script for bulls would read something like this -- advertising will soon bounce back, a rush of deal making is around the corner and a smart investor should scoop up cheap stocks straight away.

In fact, anyone who bought shares of Time Warner or Viacom about three months ago is pretty happy with the way the story ended -- those stocks have climbed at least 35%.
But in this space you’re only as good as your last hit.

What’s the media stock to own going forward?

If there’s one stock to own it’s Viacom, says Pali analyst Rich Greenfield. The film division at Paramount is doing substantially better and their cable networks are improving on a sequential basis. I expect Viacom will have a nice Q4 and I’d be a buyer into the quarter.

And I also like Discovery Networks. Oprah is launching her own network for Discovery. I’d own that into earnings.
