SULLENBERGER ON 3 THINGS

SULLENBERGER: MY CREW AND I DID THREE THINGS EXCEPTIONALLY WELL THAT DAY. FIRST WE FORCED CALM ON OURSELVES WE RESISTED THE NATURAL HUMAN INSTINCT TO RESPOND TO THAT STRESS WE ACKNOWLEDGED AN ABRUPTLY PUSHED IT ASIDE. SECOND DUE TO MY EXPERIENCE AND MY TRAINING I HAD CLEAR PRIORITIES I KNEW EVEN A NOVEL AND UNANTICIPATED SITUATION FOR WHICH WE HAD NEVER SPECIFICALLY TRAINED WITH ONLY TWO HUNDRED EIGHT SECONDS FROM THE TIME WE HIT THE BIRDS UNTIL THE TIME WE LANDED. I KNEW WHAT I NEEDED TO DO. AND FINALLY I KNEW THERE WASN’T TIME TO DO NOT ONLY WHAT I MIGHT NEED TO DO. BUT WHAT WE HAD BEEN TRAINED TO DO. I HAD TO CHOOSE AMONG THE THINGS WE NEEDED TO DO AND CHOOSE ONLY TO DO THE VERY MOST IMPORTANT THINGS BUT DO THOSE THINGS VERY VERY WELL.

SULLENBERGER- FINAL THOUGHTS

SULLENBERGER: LAST YEAR AFTER THE EMERGENCY LANDING OF FLIGHT 1549 ON THE HUDSON RIVER. MANY OF MY COLLEAGUES TOLD ME THAT THEY WEREN’T TERRIBLY SURPRISED BY THE OUTCOME BECAUSE OF THE WAY THEY HAVE WATCHED ME LIVE MY LIFE FOR THIRTY YEARS. AND IT TURNS OUT THAT MY REPUTATION HAS BEEN BUILT ONE PERSON ONE INTERACTION ONE DAY AT A TIME. AND I THINK THAT S TRUE FOR EACH OF US. IN EACH OF OUR LIVES EVERY INTERACTION THERE IS AN INHERENTLY AN OPPORTUNITY FOR GOOD FOR ILL OR FOR INDIFFERENCE. YOU MUST DECIDE WHICH IT WILL BE.
