Quiz: CNBC Quiz: Wireless Technology

Question 1 of 10

When was the first wireless phone invented?

  1. 1880
  2. 1970
  3. 1980
  4. 1985
Correct!

The first wireless phone was the Photophone, which was invented on February 19, 1880 by Alexander Graham Bell and his assistant Charles Sumner. Using light beams to transmit sound, its first message was a call placed from a rooftop by Sumner to the window of Bell’s laboratory 700 feet away. The Photophone did not catch on, but Bell nonetheless regarded it as his most significant invention, and when it was patented in December 1880, he claimed that it was a more significant invention than the telephone.
