Late Reversal Leaves S&P at Key Technical Level

A late reversal on Wall Street dragged down both the Dow and S&P.

What should you make of it as the quarter draws to a close?

Trader Steve Grasso feels the S&P closed at a key technical level, 1310. "If that level doesn’t hold the next stop is 1300," he says.

And Grasso's bias is to the downside. He later tells the desk he thinks the market tests 1249 sooner rather than later but also thinks the quarter closes before that happens.

Tim Seymour feels it tough to make a defining call considering the weakness in the market came minutes before the close. He seems to expect the market to trade sideways. "I think April will be a good run until we run out of gas on valuation," he says.

Joe Terranova's bias is higher. He's pored over some historical data and tells the desk that since Labor Day the market has rallied in every month (except for November) from the 1st through the 20th of the month. In other words, the lion's share of the gains came in the first 3 weeks. That suggests to Terranova, the market will climb as soon as late week.

Karen Finerman is watching the Vix . She says, “it’s come in dramatically." In this environment she thinks it’s worth putting on some protection.

OIL CLOSES LOWER

Elsewhere in the market, oil closed lower, as Libyan rebels regained key territory and redoubled efforts to resume oil exports.

What’s the trade?

Steve Grasso says the smart money is shorting the energy complex. "Off the 1249 low on the S&P, the XLE is up 9%," he explains. "I spoke to a bunch of fund managers today who are re-shorting at this level. They had their faces taken off, they had to cover and now they're laying out those shorts again."

Joe Terranova is on the other side; he remains bullish energy. "Seasonally this is the time of year that refiners do well. I don’t see any reason to scale down your position,” he says. He likes CNQ, CVI , PBR and XOM.

TOPPING THE TAPE: INDUSTRIALS

The traders have Honeywell on the radar with the stock hitting a 52 week high after positive mentions in Barron’s. Also Caterpillar hit an all time intraday high.

What’s the trade?

Although he thinks its a great company Tim Seymour thinks Honeywell looks a little rich. “Nothing in the sector is cheap,” he says.

Steve Grasso agrees. “Honeywell is probably overpriced, here.” He also counsels, “wait until we know more about market direction before you jump into any of these names.”

In this space Joe Terranova is watching Alcoa. “The potential for earnings upgrades are there,” he says. “I think there’s more upside.”

CALL OF THE DAY: WIRELESS

Baird Analyst Will Power gave bulls a reason to run on Monday after he upgraded ratings on four wireless carriers.

Power lifted ratings for AT&T, Verizon, MetroPCS and Leap Wireless to "Outperform" from "Neutral."

He also lifted price targets for the four stocks: $34 for AT&T, up from his prior $30; $42 for Verizon, up from $36; $22 for MetroPCS, up from $14; and $19 for Leap Wireless, up from $14.

The bullish outlook largely stems from AT&T’s deal to acquire T-Mobile, which he thinks benefits the industry as a whole.
