Secret Behind Intel's Earnings Success

Shares of Intel surged 6% in extended trade after the chip titan forecast current-quarter revenue above Wall Street's estimates.

Concerns that Apple’s iPad tablets were squeezing sales of traditional PCs had hung over Intel , along with worries across the electronics industry about supply constraints after Japan's March 14 earthquake and tsunami.

However, sales held up strongly, defying the critics.

According to comments made by CFO Stacy Smith exclusively to CNBC, part of the strength comes from demand in emerging markets. "Well over half of our shipments are into emerging markets. And in (emerging markets) the desire to get a PC coupled with the affordability has gotten to a point where... consumers can afford a computer and are out buying them. That's fueling our business," Smith explains.

By the numbers, the company reported a 25 percent jump in first-quarter revenue to $12.8 billion, beating estimates. First-quarter net income was $3.2 billion, up 29 percent over the year-ago period. Earnings per share were 56 cents.

Analysts had expected first-quarter revenue of $11.59 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

How should you trade it?

Guy Adami says he’s hard pressed to say go about and buy this stock considering it typically trades in a range. However he adds if you’re long it could go to $22.

Trader Tim Seymour feels the same. He reminds the desk that Intel typically blows out their numbers and it doesn’t move the stock above its range.

As Joe Terranova pores over the numbers, he says, “these positive results could be a positive read through for Teradyne, Broadcom or even AMD .”

Trader Karen Finerman is looking at the big picture. She thinks the Intel results combined with other positive data out of tech could boost the Nasdaq on Wednesday.
