Big Oil in Big Trouble?

Big oil could land in the spotlight this week.

In fact the Fast traders are preparing to hear from a slew of heavy hitters. Just take a look at the names on deck.

Wednesday: BP, Baker Hughes, ConocoPhilips, Hess
Thursday: Noble, Exxon
Friday: Chevron

But instead of the usual talk of refining margins and OPEC quotas, this time the earnings calls could sound more like campaign speeches.

On Tuesday President Obama challenged Congress to slash subsidies for the oil majors.

In a letter to House Speaker John Boehner and others, the President said “High oil and gasoline prices are weighing on the minds and pocketbooks of every American family.”

“While there is no silver bullet to address rising gas prices in the short term, there are steps we can take to ensure the American people don’t fall victim to skyrocketing gas prices over the long term. One of those steps is to eliminate unwarranted tax breaks to the oil and gas industry and invest that revenue into clean energy to reduce our dependence on foreign oil," he wrote.

According to published reports, the President wants to eliminate a number of tax breaks that would generate, administration officials said, around $4 billion a year in additional revenue.

What’s the trade?

Joe Terranova suggests trading events longExxon and Occidental because he thinks the oil majors will feel compelled to return capital to shareholders.

Karen Finerman isn’t quite so sure. She can’t help but wonder if the oil companies spend more on exploration, if only to get some of the cash off the books.
