Alcatel CEO Sees Wireless Growth Into 2013

North America's continuing love affair with the smartphone and the tablet will power Alcatel-Lucent's sales for at least the next two years, Chief Executive Ben Verwaayen told CNBC Friday.

Alcatel-Lucent said Friday it narrowed its first-quarter loss, helped by a 40 percent increase in North American sales, its largest market.

"I think the buildout of networks in the US, driven by all those smartphones and tablets and all the rest of the stuff, will go into 2012 will go into probably even 2013," Verwaayen said.

"We’ve broadened our base in the US. We’re doing very very well. So I’m pretty optimistic that 3G and 4G will be a driving force for a long time to come."
