Morgan Stanley will outperform Goldman Sachs when it reports its third-quarter earnings results before Wednesday’s opening bell, an analyst said Tuesday.
“[Morgan Stanley] has more revenue tied to equity sales and trading, which was a great performer in the quarter,” said Michael Wong, an analyst at Morningstar in Chicago. “And less exposure to fixed-income trading and principal investments, which is what really tanked Goldman Sachs’ earnings.”
If the financial institution has no liquidity concerns or solvency issues, Wong said the stock is “almost too cheap to ignore” at half a book value. In the medium to long-term, he sees three drivers for the stock and its earnings, including expense savings, tailwinds from an improved economy and improved trading revenues.
