If you’re looking for a winner, you might have Pfizer on your radar. After all in a sea of red, the world’s biggest drug maker was a beacon of green in trading Tuesday.
Investors drove the stock higher after thecompany released better than expected earnings and increased its full year forecast.
But if you’re instinct is to put money to work in Pfizer, trader Zach Karabell thinks you have it all wrong.
“I’m not a big fan,” he said. “I think it still has a very troubled business model.”
While the company saw its earnings soar, it still has a big negative looming over its head—its blockbuster cholesterol fighting drug Lipitor comes off patent at the end of November.
“We know that their pipeline is heavily compromised,” Karabell said. “So we know they are going to have to spend some of that cash in order to buy their R&D pipeline.”
While Pfizer will spin off a dividend every year and is okay for a 401k account, he said it’s not a name he’s interested in trading.
“It’s hard to get excited about health care in a world where health care costs are simply out of control and will come in,” he said.
