The Chime Card offers 5% cash back and no annual fee

Chime's secured card also comes with no interest or late fees.

Share

The secured Chime Visa® Credit Card1, formerly known as the Chime Credit Builder Secured Visa® Credit Card2, is a no-annual-fee secured credit card that allows cardholders to earn 5% cash back3 on a category of choice each month. Additionally, it doesn't require a credit check for approval, and there are no late fees or interest4.

"We're building on top of the everyday banking features our members already rely on, to make the Chime® experience even more rewarding," Chime® co-founder Ryan King said in a statement. "We've kept the benefits people value most and removed the mandatory fees and barriers they don't."

Cash back with no annual fees or interest

The Chime Card offers Chime Prime members 5% cash back in the eligible categories you choose each month, which include: grocery stores, gas, restaurants and travel.

To be eligible for Chime Prime status5, you'll need to receive $3,000 or more in qualifying direct deposits to your Chime Checking Account in the past 34 days. Those who have Chime Plus status (which can be earned either via a single $200+ qualifying direct deposit or $400+ in cumulative direct deposits) will earn 2% cash back in their chosen category.

It's worth noting that the 5% or 2% cash back applies to up to $1,500 in eligible purchases per month, meaning you can earn a maximum of $75 or $30 in cash back, respectively. Once you reach that limit, additional eligible purchases won't earn cash back.

There are no annual fees, maintenance fees or foreign transaction fees with the Chime Card™. There are also no interest or late fees for missed payments. Failing to pay your statement balance on time will pause your ability to make new purchases and could be reported to the credit bureaus. However, the same applies to on-time payments, which can help boost your credit score.

Safe credit-building for everyone

The Chime Card doesn't require a credit check to open, and applying won't impact your credit, making it a good option for people with poor credit or a thin credit history.

But it works differently from other secured cards: If you're approved, you'll also get a Chime Checking Account and a Chime Secured Deposit Account. Funds added to your checking account are automatically transferred to the Secured Deposit Account6, which acts as collateral and determines your spending limit.

You can use the money in your Secured Deposit Account to pay off your balance automatically every month, or make manual payments from any bank account. The unique structure of your deposit serving as both collateral and a method to make payments could help reduce the risk of accumulating too much debt.

In addition, your card activity is reported to all three credit bureaus, which can help you build a positive credit history7.

Final thoughts

The Chime Card, which replaces the Chime Credit Builder Secured Visa® Credit Card, offers consumers a new way to build credit while earning rewards. It's the latest addition to the fintech's suite of products and features, which include a high-yield savings account, fee-free overdraft protection through SpotMe®8 and access to paychecks up to 2 days early with direct deposit through Early Pay9.

FAQs

Chime® is not hard to get approved for because it doesn't require a hard credit check. Chime® also doesn't review your ChexSystems history, which is similar to a credit bureau but tracks your checking and savings account activities.

The Chime Card™ is a secured credit card, and your credit limit is determined by the balance in your secured deposit account. The advantage of a secured card is that it doesn't require a credit check, so it's easy to get approved.

Since the Chime Card™ is a secured credit card, you cannot use it if you have no money in your secured deposit account. This is because your credit limit is based on your secured deposit account balance.
