Economists debate the pros and cons of $2,000 direct payments
The $2,000 stimulus checks now being considered by Congress would by far be the largest ever sent out and have sparked a debate among economists about whether they are necessary or effective. Some say sending money to the employed is a waste of taxpayer funds while others think the checks would inject a lot of money quickly into the economy, and provide benefits to people who may slip through the cracks of the existing benefits system. CNBC's Steve Liesman breaks down the debate.
