The National Rifle Association has scaled down its social media presence in the wake of the tragic school shooting in Newton, Conn.
The NRA's Facebook page is no longer appearing on the social network. Its Twitter page was up, but the organization has not posted any tweets on Twitter since Friday, when a gunman massacred 26 children and adults before committing suicide.
Facebook users trying to access the NRA's page are redirected to the user's Facebook homepage. The NRA has not confirmed that it was responsible for unpublishing its page, and Facebook did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The nonprofit NRA, which is focused on protecting the right to bear arms in the U.S., has previously faced a backlash from critics on various social platforms. (Read More: Facebook's New Privacy Controls: Simpler, Easier )
After a gunman's rampage in Aurora, Colo., in July, the NRA was strongly criticized for an insensitive tweet it sent out. The morning after that shooting, the tweet said "Good morning shooters. Happy Friday! Weekend Plans?"
The NRA said the person who sent out that tweet was unaware of the movie theater shooting, and it removed the tweet.
