Google getting in to home improvement business

Google wants to be everywhere—even outer space—and now the tech behemoth wants to stay closer to home.

Your home.

The web giant is planning a new service in the home services market, according to a report by BuzzFeed News.

Currently, Google provides phone numbers, reviews and websites for local contractors ranging from chimney sweepers to landscapers. The new service will provide direct communication with these providers, according to the report. Details haven't been announced on how it will work.

This once again puts Google in competition with Amazon, which recently expanded its own home service initiative.

The service will also rival Yelp, Groupon, Priceline and Angie's List.

"Background checks, customer reviews, consumer protections for bad service all add layers of complexity, but if anyone can automate a seemingly daunting market via data, it's Google," said Louis Basenese, founder of Disruptive Tech Research.

It's not Google's first foray in this space. In 2014, the company invested $100 million in home service company Thumbtack.
