Pandora celebrates 10th anniversary

It's been 10 years since Pandora started as a small team with an idea to change the way consumers listen to music.

Now it has more than 80 million monthly active listeners and nearly 1,000 employees in its Oakland, California headquarters.

While Pandora offers its employees a plethora of free snacks, cereals and candy, it doesn't serve a catered lunch, like many Silicon Valley companies. "We really want our employees to support the local Oakland community," Lizzie Widhelm, senior vice president of strategy, told CNBC during an office tour.

The employees at Pandora, like many in tech, sit in an open office environment. "We don't have offices, so the places we get to see each other and catch up with friends are the kitchen areas," Widhelm said.

Upon first arriving, guests are greeted in the lobby with panoramic views of Oakland, as a backdrop for its largest eating area. There, employees bring their lunch or laptops and socialize or conduct meetings.

As for one of the most popular employee perks, it may just be the free avocados. "There's a bit of an avocado race around here," Widhelm said. "People try and get in early to get the avocados."
