Apple is planning to "loop" the media in on its latest plans at an invitation-only event March 21, according to invitations the tight-lipped tech giant sent to CNBC.

It's unclear from the invitations what's in store for the highly-anticipated Cupertino event. But industry insiders have speculated Apple might reveal new products at its first big showing of the year.

Could Apple have a 5.8-inch phablet in the pipeline?

The Apple pipeline could include new iPhone called the iPhone SE, which would be the size of the iPhone 5s but with the bells and whistles of later models, according to technology blog 9to5Mac. Analysts at RBC Capital Markets estimate a 4-inch mobile phone could add $6 billion to Apple's sales this fiscal year.

A new 9.7-inch iPad could also be slated to debut, according to another blog, MacRumors.

To be sure, these reports remain rumors, since Apple has yet to comment so far on any new products in the works. Meanwhile, Apple is set to face the FBI in court the next day, continuing the high-profile battle over unlocking a terrorists' iPhone.
