Even fish need to see the dentist, it seems.

Dr. Brian Palmerio, a veterinarian in Pennsylvania, found social media fame this week after surgically attaching braces to the mouth of a goldfish, according to an NBC affiliate.

The fish, Mr. Hot Wing, was born without a lower jawbone, making it difficult for the pet fish to keep his mouth open, eat and breathe.

The braces were crafted out of a piece of a credit card, and the entire procedure cost $150.

While that may seem like an extravagant expense for a fish, it pales in comparison to the $750 that a Scottish woman spent last year on surgeries for her two teenage goldfish.

Lehigh Valley Veterinary Dermatology did not immediately respond to CNBC's request for comment.
