Watch President Trump make an announcement about the Iran nuclear deal

Key Points

President Donald Trump is scheduled to deliver a speech at 12:45 p.m. ET on his administration's new strategy to contain Iran.

That strategy will start with the president's intention to tell Congress that the landmark Iran nuclear deal is no longer in America's national security interest, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson told reporters on Thursday

Under U.S. law, Trump is required to certify to Congress every 90 days whether Iran is complying with the international accord. By refusing to certify the deal, Trump will give lawmakers the option to reimpose sanctions suspended under the nuclear deal, an act that would unravel the accord.

However, Trump will advise Congress not to snap the sanctions back on Iran and instead ask lawmakers to amend U.S. law as part of the new strategy, Tillerson said. That course will also include a diplomatic effort to convince U.S. allies to impose new sanctions on Iran over its ballistic missile tests and its intervention in regional conflicts.
