New Hampshire state police have confirmed that 35 vehicles were involved in two separate pileups on I-93 northbound near the town of Ashland. Initially, it was suspected that upwards of 50 cars were involved.
Calls about the accidents came in as early as 9:45 a.m. ET Friday morning.
One of the crashes involved a truck trailer that caught fire after another vehicle drove underneath it. It is unknown what was being transported in the trailer, but footage shows boxes strewn along the highway.
Weather forecasts warned of icy roads and snow squalls; local police said that these conditions contributed to the crash. Lt. Jerry Maslan, a state police spokesman, said that many vehicles on the road were driving in excess of the 75 mph speed limit. Multiple injuries have been reported, but no fatalities.
Traffic was heavy, likely due to drivers heading north for a ski weekend. There are 22 ski resorts located within 30 miles of Ashland.
Maslan added that earlier in the morning there had been multiple fender benders on I-89 in Grantham, but no injuries were reported.
