Edward G. Robinson was originally born Emanuel Goldenberg in Bucharest. He emigrated to the United States with his family at the age of 10, and changed his name prior to joining the Navy. He broke through to movie audiences in the role of Rico Bandello in the 1931 gangster classic "Little Caesar," and was cast primarily in mobster and thug roles throughout the 1930s and 1940s. Robinson also starred in prominent movies in other genres, such as Cecil B. DeMille's biblical epic, "The Ten Commandments," and the science fiction film "Soylent Green," both alongside his good friend Charlton Heston. After his death in 1973, he won a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Oscars and was pictured on a commemorative postage stamp. He also served as the inspiration for the voice of police chief Clancy Wiggum on "The Simpsons."
