How to save on Thanksgiving travel with your credit card

Holiday travel is more expensive this year, but with the right card (and some planning), you can keep costs down.

Share

Whether you're headed home for Thanksgiving or planning a Turkey Day getaway, you'll probably face higher prices this holiday travel season. Roundtrip economy prices are already up roughly 10% this year for both domestic and international flights over Thanksgiving week, according to Points Path CEO and founder Julian Kheel, and business and first-class seats are up 6% to 10% as well.

As availability shrinks, fares are likely to climb the closer you get to Thursday, Nov. 26. If you haven't booked your trip yet, we're sharing some tips on saving money (and time) with your credit card.

Make the most of your next trip with one of these top travel credit cards

Book flights and hotels using points or miles

To avoid tapping into your savings or racking up more credit card debt, book using credit card points, airline miles or hotel points you've accrued throughout the year.

If you don't have enough points to cover your trip, a welcome bonus can give you a quick boost. The Wells Fargo Autograph® Card offers a sign-up bonus of 20,000 bonus points after you make just $1,000 in purchases within the first three months. Plus, there's no annual fee.

Pick a card that has price-drop protection

It's not common, but prices do go down sometimes. While most card issuers have stopped price-drop protection benefits, the lone holdout is Capital One. When you book select flights in the Capital One Travel portal, the system monitors the price for 10 days. If the price goes down, you can get up to $50 back as a travel credit.

The Venture and Venture X cards feature this perk, as does the Capital One Savor Cash Rewards credit card. On top of cash-back rewards on everyday purchases, Savor Cash Rewards earns 5% back on hotels, vacation rentals and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel. There's no annual fee or foreign transaction fees, and cardholders get a $200 welcome bonus after spending $500 in the first three months.

Book your flight with a credit card that has built-in travel insurance

Travel insurance is always a smart move, but a standalone policy can get pricey. Fortunately, many credit cards provide built-in travel insurance if you use the card to book your trip.

The Chase Sapphire Reserve® (see rates and fees) comes with some of the most robust travel protections we've seen from any card, including up to $20,000 in trip cancelation/interruption insurance per trip, up to $500 per ticket for a trip delay of six hours or more, up to $3,000 per passenger for lost, damaged or stolen luggage and up to $2,500 in emergency medical care if you get sick or hurt 100 miles or more from home (minus a $50 deductible). If you're renting a car, it also comes with up to $75,000 in primary auto rental coverage for theft and collision damage.

What to know about using your credit card to book Thanksgiving travel

If you're using a credit card to pay for airline tickets, hotel rooms, rental cars or other travel expenses, make sure the savings outweigh any annual fee, minimum spend requirement and the holiday premium tacked onto airfares and hotel rooms.

  • Compare the cash price to the points price. Don't automatically redeem miles because you can. See how much the same flight or room costs in cash.
  • Check transfer partners. If your credit card allows you to transfer points to an airline or hotel loyalty program, you may be able to save a lot more than using the card's travel portal.
  • Compare cards. If you have multiple cards, check which one offers the most bonus points or miles for airfare, hotels or rental cars booked through its portal.
  • Look at your card's travel protections. Benefits may include trip cancellation/interruption coverage, baggage insurance, rental-car coverage and even emergency medical expenses.
  • Decide whether to book directly or through the portal. Your card's travel portal might offer bonus points or a discount rate, but booking directly can make changes easier.
  • Don't overspend just to earn the welcome bonus. Thanksgiving travel is pricey enough without spending extra just to hit a rewards threshold.
  • Pay attention to cancellation rules. A slightly more expensive fare may be worth it if it's flexible or refundable.
  • Pay the balance in full. The value of any reward can be quickly eaten up by high-interest credit card debt.
  • Check baggage and seat fees. Checking luggage can cost around $50 per bag. A checked-bag benefit can be very cost-effective for a longer trip.
  • Book early and keep checking. Thanksgiving demand will push prices up, so compare options early. If your card has price-protection benefits, you may have flexibility if the fare drops.

FAQs

According to a historical analysis by Google Flights, Thanksgiving fares are typically cheapest about five weeks before departure, with a broader low-price window of roughly 24–59 days out. That suggests the best time to book is mid-to-late September through late October. But it's only a prediction — rising demand, increased fuel prices, global political tensions and other factors could cause prices to spike earlier.

According to TSA passenger volume data from the last five years, Thanksgiving Day is the least busy day to travel during the holiday week. The Sunday after Thanksgiving is consistently the busiest travel day of the year, with the Tuesday and Wednesday before Thanksgiving also seeing major congestion.

Booking through your card's travel portal allows you to redeem accumulated points and travel credits and may help you avoid award seat availability limits. However, booking directly through the carrier makes it easier to earn airline miles, use elite status benefits and change your itinerary if your flight is delayed or canceled. If your card allows you to transfer points to an airline loyalty program, you may be able to save a lot more than using the travel portal.
