Facebook's staggering $16 billion acquisition of mobile messaging start-up WhatsApp last Wednesday stunned some industry watchers who said the deal was massively overpriced and a sign of desperation by Facebook to retain its users.

This is the social networking giant's largest acquisition yet, highlighting its ambition to get a piece of the fast-growing mobile messaging market. Facebook last purchased Instagram for $1 billion in 2012 and offered to buy photo-sharing mobile app Snapchat for $3 billion last year, an offer that was rejected.
