This week a host of companies were set to announce earnings, including major technology names on the S&P 500, such as Apple, Amazon.com and Google's parent Alphabet.

Analysts reckoned companies were on the road to recovery from an earnings recession that dampened their outlooks earlier this year.

On Thursday, Andrew Slimmon, a senior portfolio manager for Morgan Stanley Investment Management, told CNBC's "Power Lunch" he predicted 13 to 14 percent earnings growth in 2017.

Slimmon believed oil and energy earnings would push growth higher, and there was also upside for technology and financials.
