The building in which La Guarida operates happens to be Enrique's childhood home; it was also one of the sets for the 1993 Oscar-nominated film Strawberry and Chocolate. When Enrique saw how many visitors were stopping by, he and his wife decided to open a restaurant in their home and sold everything they had to fund it.
La Guarida is now one of the most popular establishments in Havana and has become somewhat of a celebrity haunt. Will Smith, Beyoncé, Jay-Z, and Jack Nicholson have all dined there.
Marcus' Takeaway: "Bottom line? Enrique is doing pretty well. He just opened a rooftop bar with great views – and the tourists are drinking it in."
