Competing for talent: the little things matter

As competition to acquire and retain talent heats up, it’s easy for a small business to feel like the underdog — but that needn’t be the case.

At Radio Flyer Inc., workers can play video games onsite during "Wii hours." Tech consulting firm ENGEO hosts chili cook-offs and sushi demo days. You can bring your dog to work at china and silverware retailer Replacements, Ltd. And a host of other small companies offer everything from massage therapy and life coaching to a one-time gift of $5,000 to buy a home.

Adding value to your existing benefits package doesn't have to cost a fortune —sometimes it costs nothing at all. Offer a catered lunch once a week (even if it's just pizza). Consider half-day Fridays in the summer in exchange for working late other days. Reward workers with small, merit-based stipends to help cover transportation costs. Maintain generous work-from-home and flex-hour policies. Build relationships with local retailers to get special discounts on dry cleaning, car repair, fitness centers and other services your employees purchase on a regular basis.

A little creativity can go a long way to add perks and personality to your existing benefits package.
