And even better news: there are plenty of free resources to help take the next step.

Learn the basics: SBA.gov has an online course, "Taking Your Business Global," that helps entrepreneurs determine if exports make sense for their business and what it takes for a business to be deemed "export ready."

Dig deeper: Both Business.usa.gov and The Trade Information Center (1-800-USA-TRADE) provide information about government export programs, market research, trade leads and contract opportunities, and information about export financing.

Find a mentor: Expertise is available from your local SCORE chapter or contact one of the Small Business Development Centers throughout the U.S. and its territories. To find assistance in your area, visit http://www.sba.gov/tools/local-assistance.
